Thinking

Chapter 8: The Last Ride

The room went completely silent.

Not the peaceful kind.

The kind of silence that comes when everyone is waiting for the same person to finally speak.

Claire.

I stared at her.

“What happened in the car?””

Her face lost all color.

“Daniel…”

“No.””

My voice was calm.

Too calm.

“I don’t want another explanation that starts with you protecting me.””

Claire looked down.

“I was trying to protect Maya.””

“That’s what you always say.””

The words came out sharper than I intended.

But I couldn’t stop.

Because every secret she had hidden had been wrapped in the same excuse.

Protection.

Love.

Family.

As if those words could erase the damage.

Thomas stood near the window.

His expression was filled with anger.

“You knew this day would come.””

Claire looked at him.

“I knew the truth would destroy everything.””

Thomas shook his head.

“No.””

He looked at me.

“The truth was destroyed years ago.””

I looked back at Claire.

“What happened that night?””

She didn’t answer.

“Maya deserves to know.””

At the mention of her name, Claire closed her eyes.

Then she sat down.

“I met your first wife at the old house.””

My chest tightened.

“The house in the photograph?””

She nodded.

“Yes.””

“When?””

“About an hour before the accident.””

I felt sick.

“You never told me you saw her that night.””

“I know.””

“Why?””

Claire looked at me.

“Because I was afraid.””

“Of what?””

She looked at Maya.

“Of losing you both.””

Maya stepped forward.

“You keep saying that.””

Her voice was quiet.

But stronger than before.

“You keep making everything about what you were afraid of.””

Claire looked hurt.

“I loved you.””

Maya shook her head.

“Maybe.””

The word cut through the room.

“But you loved the family you wanted more.””

Nobody spoke.

Claire looked away.

I knew Maya was right about one thing.

Claire had spent years protecting an image.

The perfect family.

The perfect marriage.

The perfect life.

But underneath it was a collection of things nobody wanted to discuss.

I looked at Claire.

“Start from the beginning.””

She took a deep breath.

“She called me.””

“Your sister?””

“No.””

“My first wife.””

Claire’s voice became quieter.

“She said she had found something about Maya’s birth.””

Maya froze.

“She told me someone had been hiding the truth from her for years.””

“Who?””

Claire shook her head.

“She didn’t know.””

“Then why was she afraid?””

“Because the person who knew the truth had threatened her.””

Thomas stepped forward.

“She called me too.””

Claire looked at him.

“You weren’t supposed to tell him.””

“I’m done keeping your secrets.””

I looked between them.

“What did the threat say?””

Claire hesitated.

Then answered.

“She was told that if she tried to reveal anything, she would lose Maya.””

The room felt colder.

“And she came to you?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Claire looked down.

“Because she thought I would help her.””

The words hurt.

Because they sounded so simple.

My first wife trusted Claire.

The woman who would later become my wife.

The woman who raised Brooke beside Maya.

The woman who stood beside me at the funeral.

“What happened when you met her?””

Claire’s hands shook.

“She was crying.””

I closed my eyes.

I could imagine it.

The woman I loved.

Scared.

Alone.

Searching for answers.

“And?””

“She showed me documents.””

“What documents?””

“Records about Maya.””

“The same ones?””

Claire nodded.

“She believed someone had changed them.””

“Did you believe her?””

Claire looked at me.

“At first, no.””

That answer surprised me.

“Why?””

“Because I thought she was panicking.””

Claire swallowed.

“She had been under pressure for weeks. She was exhausted. She was terrified.””

“And you thought she was wrong.””

“Yes.””

A painful silence.

“But then?””

Claire looked at the floor.

“Then she showed me something else.””

“What?””

“A message.””

“From who?””

“I don’t know.””

“You never found out?””

“No.””

Thomas interrupted.

“You did.””

Claire turned.

“You knew the name.””

Thomas’s voice hardened.

“You just refused to say it.””

I looked at Claire.

“Who?””

She didn’t answer.

“Claire.””

Her eyes filled.

“Ethan.””

The name meant nothing to me.

“Who is Ethan?””

Claire looked at Maya.

Then me.

“Your first wife’s biological father.””

The room stopped.

“What?””

Thomas went pale.

“That’s impossible.””

Claire shook her head.

“No.””

Maya looked confused.

“My biological father?””

Claire nodded.

“Yes.””

I looked at Thomas.

“Why didn’t anyone tell me?””

Thomas looked away.

“Because my sister didn’t know how to.””

“What does that mean?””

“It means the man who raised her wasn’t her biological father either.””

I felt overwhelmed.

Every truth seemed to open another door.

Maya sat down.

“So my whole life…”

Her voice broke.

Claire immediately stepped forward.

“Maya—”

“No.””

Maya looked at her.

“You knew all this.””

“I was trying to protect you.””

“You knew my father’s name.””

Claire said nothing.

That silence was enough.

Maya looked at me.

“Did you know?””

The question hurt more than anything else.

Because I had no answer.

“No.””

She nodded slowly.

“Okay.””

But her voice sounded broken.

Not angry.

Worse.

Disappointed.

I moved toward her.

“Maya.””

She stood.

“I need a minute.””

She walked away.

I wanted to follow.

But I couldn’t.

Not yet.

There were still too many questions.

I turned back to Claire.

“What happened after you met her?””

Claire wiped her tears.

“She left.””

“Where?””

“To meet Ethan.””

“Why?””

“To get answers.””

“And then?””

Claire looked at the floor.

“I followed her.””

My heart stopped.

“You followed her?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because I was scared.””

“Of what?””

Claire looked at me.

“That she would take Maya away.””

The honesty was almost worse.

“So you followed her.””

“Yes.””

“To where?””

“The highway.””

The room became silent.

“The accident happened there.””

Claire nodded.

I stared at her.

“You were there.””

“Yes.””

“Did you see it happen?””

Her face collapsed.

“Yes.””

Nobody moved.

Thomas looked horrified.

“You watched.””

Claire shook her head quickly.

“No.””

“Then what happened?””

Claire covered her face.

“I tried to stop it.””

My heart pounded.

“What does that mean?””

“She pulled over.””

“Who?””

“Your first wife.””

“Why?””

“She saw someone following us.””

“Us?””

Claire nodded.

“She knew I was behind her.””

“And then?””

Claire looked at me.

“I got out of my car.””

The words came slowly.

“I walked toward her.””

“What happened?””

“She was angry.””

“Why?””

“Because she realized I had followed her.””

Claire’s voice cracked.

“She said I didn’t understand what I had done.””

My breathing slowed.

“What did she mean?””

Claire looked at Maya.

“She said the person who threatened her wasn’t the only danger.””

“Who else?””

Claire whispered:

“Me.””

The room went silent.

I stared at her.

“No.””

Claire started crying.

“I didn’t mean to hurt her.””

Thomas stepped forward.

“But you did.””

“No!””

Claire looked at him.

“I was trying to take the documents from her.””

My stomach dropped.

“What documents?””

“The evidence.””

“Why?””

“Because I thought I was protecting Maya.””

The words came out broken.

“I thought if I destroyed the evidence, nobody could use it against her.””

I stared.

“You destroyed evidence?””

“No.””

Claire shook her head.

“I tried.””

The distinction felt meaningless.

“What happened next?””

Claire looked at the floor.

“She got back into the car.””

“And?””

“She drove away.””

“Then the accident happened.””

Claire nodded.

“But there was something I never told anyone.””

“What?””

Her eyes met mine.

“I wasn’t the only person there.””

A chill moved through me.

“Who else?””

Claire looked toward the front door.

Toward the darkness outside.

Then she said:

“The person who caused the accident.””

The room froze.

“Who was it?””

Claire whispered the name.

A name I never expected.

A name that connected every secret.

Every lie.

Every missing piece.

“It was Ethan.””

Maya gasped.

Thomas stepped back.

And my phone suddenly rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

A man’s voice came through.

Calm.

Cold.

Familiar.

“Daniel.””

My blood ran cold.

“How do you know my name?””

A pause.

Then:

“Because I’m the man your wife tried to erase.””

The call ended.

And on my screen appeared one final message.
