Chapter 5: The Woman Who Wanted My Silence

Savannah stepped into the lake house as though she owned it.
She removed her gloves and placed them on the table.
Then she looked at Grace.
"Come here, sweetheart.""
Grace immediately moved behind my legs.
Savannah's expression hardened.
"Grace. I said come here.""
The little girl shook her head.
I bent down.
"Stay with me, sweetheart.""
Savannah laughed without humor.
"You're still pretending to be her mother?""
I stood.
"No. I'm the person who saved her life.""
Her eyes moved toward my swollen cheek.
"Apparently, you're also the person who enjoys creating problems.""
Lucas stepped between us.
"Enough, Savannah.""
She turned toward him.
"You have some nerve.""
"You pushed her.""
Savannah slowly removed her coat.
"Be careful, Lucas.""
"I saw what you did.""
"And you did absolutely nothing.""
He went silent.
Savannah smiled.
"That's what I thought.""
I felt Grace's hand tighten around mine.
"Why did you come here?"" I asked.
Savannah looked at me as if she had forgotten I was in the room.
"To collect my husband's daughter.""
"Then why did you say she doesn't belong to you?""
Her smile disappeared.
"Because she doesn't.""
"She's a child. She needs protection, not ownership.""
Savannah took a step closer.
"Do you know how difficult it is to build a family when another woman's memory is constantly sitting at your dinner table?""
I stared at her.
"Emily is dead.""
"Exactly.""
The cruelty of that single word made my stomach turn.
Savannah continued.
"Every birthday, every Christmas, every school photograph. There's always something about Emily. A relative sending presents.
A grandmother asking for pictures. Ethan visiting her grave.""
She laughed bitterly.
"I have given that man everything, and somehow his dead wife still gets more attention than I do.""
Lucas shook his head.
"Emily was Grace's mother.""
"She was a mistake.""
The words came out casually.
As though she were discussing an unwanted decoration.
I looked at Grace.
She didn't understand every word.
But she understood the hatred in Savannah's voice.
"Stop talking about her like that," I said.
Savannah turned.
"You're a temporary employee. Don't confuse your position with importance.""
"I saw you push Grace.""
"And who is going to believe you?""
She reached into her handbag and pulled out a folded document.
"Do you know what this is?""
I didn't answer.
"It's a temporary guardianship agreement.""
She placed it on the table.
"Ethan signed it last month. He authorized me to make decisions concerning Grace's care.""
Lucas picked it up.
His expression changed.
"That's not what this says.""
Savannah snatched it away.
"Stay out of this.""
"You told Ethan it was for school enrollment.""
"It is.""
"Then why does it give you authority to restrict contact with Emily's family?""
Savannah's eyes flashed.
"Because those people have been interfering with my marriage.""
I stepped closer.
"Does Ethan know?""
She smiled.
"Ethan knows exactly what he needs to know.""
Then she looked at me.
"And if you repeat anything you've heard tonight, I'll make sure you never work as a nurse again.""
I felt my hands begin to tremble.
But I kept my voice steady.
"You've already accused me of hurting Grace. You had your husband assault me. You've tried to silence the photographer. What else are you planning?""
Savannah's smile returned.
"Perhaps you should worry about yourself.""
She opened her handbag again.
This time, she removed a small velvet box.
She placed it beside the guardianship document.
Inside was a gold necklace.
A delicate heart-shaped pendant.
I recognized it from the photographs Olivia had shown me.
It had belonged to Emily.
"Where did you get that?"" Lucas demanded.
Savannah closed the box.
"From the place it belongs.""
"That was Emily's.""
"Emily is dead.""
Lucas slammed his hand against the table.
"Give it back!""
Savannah stepped away.
"Touch me, and I'll tell Ethan you threatened me.""
I looked at the necklace.
Then at the purple ribbon tied around the box beside it.
Something clicked.
"That was what Grace's present contained.""
Savannah looked at me.
"Excuse me?""
"The necklace.""
Her face changed.
I continued.
"You took it out before the party. That's why Grace was carrying the empty box.""
Savannah said nothing.
Lucas looked at me.
"How did you know?""
"Olivia saw her removing something from the package.""
Savannah laughed.
"That photographer should learn to mind her own business.""
Then she reached for Grace.
I stepped between them.
"Don't.""
Her eyes narrowed.
"Move.""
"No.""
For a moment, neither of us moved.
Then Grace spoke.
"Mommy?""
Savannah looked down.
"Yes, sweetheart?""
Grace pointed toward the velvet box.
"Mommy Emily.""
Savannah's face turned white.
"Who taught you that name?""
Grace looked at me.
"Hanna.""
I knelt beside her.
"Sweetheart, it's okay.""
Savannah grabbed her wrist.
Grace screamed.
"NO!""
I immediately pulled the child toward me.
"Let go of her!""
Savannah released her.
Then she slapped me.
The sound echoed through the small house.
I stumbled sideways.
Lucas caught my arm.
"Are you insane?""
Savannah straightened her coat.
"She attacked me.""
I stared at her.
"You hit me.""
"Prove it.""
Then, from outside, came the sound of car doors.
Several voices.
A knock.
"Police! Open the door!""
Savannah's expression changed instantly.
She began crying.
She hurried toward the entrance.
"Oh, thank God!""
The door opened.
Two officers stepped inside.
Behind them stood Officer Brooks.
His eyes moved from Savannah to Lucas.
Then to Grace.
Finally, he noticed my cheek.
"What happened here?""
Savannah began speaking before anyone else could.
"This woman kidnapped my daughter!""
Officer Brooks raised his hand.
"Mrs. Whitmore, step back.""
Savannah pointed at me.
"She came here with Lucas. They stole Grace from my home!""
Lucas shook his head.
"That's not true.""
Savannah turned toward the officers.
"My husband will confirm everything.""
Officer Brooks looked at me.
"Ms. Miller, are you hurt?""
"Yes.""
He nodded toward another officer.
"Get medical assistance.""
Then he turned to Lucas.
"Mr. Bennett, we need to talk.""
Lucas looked at Grace.
"Please don't let her take the child.""
Savannah began sobbing louder.
"She's my daughter!""
Officer Brooks glanced at the document on the table.
Then at the velvet box.
"Whose necklace is that?""
Nobody answered.
He picked up the box.
Savannah immediately stepped forward.
"That's private property.""
"Then you won't mind explaining why it's here.""
She looked at the officers.
And for the first time, I saw genuine fear in her eyes.
But the biggest surprise came when Officer Brooks turned toward Lucas.
"Mr. Bennett, we found something else in your vehicle.""
Lucas went completely still.
"What?""
The officer held up a clear evidence bag.
Inside was a small photograph of Emily.
And beneath it was a handwritten note.
Officer Brooks read the first sentence aloud.
"To whoever finds this: If anything happens to me, Savannah Whitmore is responsible.""
Savannah stopped crying.
Lucas closed his eyes.
And I realized that the story I had walked into was much darker than a Christmas party.
Later that evening, while another officer spoke with Savannah, I sat with Grace in the back of an ambulance.
A paramedic checked my cheek.
Grace held my hand.
Officer Brooks approached the open door.
"Ms. Miller, I need to ask you something.""
I nodded.
"Go ahead.""
He glanced toward the mansion's direction, although we were miles away.
"Did you know Emily's death was investigated?""
I frowned.
"What do you mean?""
"Her car went off a bridge during a storm. The case was closed as an accident.""
"Why are you asking?""
He hesitated.
"Because the note we found contains information that wasn't included in the original report.""
I looked down at Grace.
"What information?""
Officer Brooks lowered his voice.
"Emily believed someone had tampered with her car.""
My blood ran cold.
"Who?""
He looked toward the lake house.
"We don't know yet.""
Then he added:
"But there's a second name in that note.""
I waited.
May you like
He looked directly at me.
"Ethan Whitmore.""
