Chapter 5: The Woman Russell Trusted
I didn’t let her inside immediately.
Maybe that sounds cruel.
Maybe after everything Russell had taught me about kindness, I should have opened the door without hesitation.
But Russell had also taught me something else.
Trust was not the same as ignoring danger.
And the woman standing in front of me was a stranger who had just told me she was the reason my husband changed his will.
A sentence like that didn’t deserve an automatic invitation.
“Who are you?”” I asked again.
The woman swallowed.
“My name is Claire Bennett.””
The name meant nothing to me.
I studied her face.
She looked to be in her late fifties. Her hair was pulled back neatly, but loose strands had escaped around her face. She wore a simple gray coat, no jewelry, no expensive accessories.
Nothing about her suggested she belonged in Russell’s world.
But then again, neither had I.
“Why did Russell send you here?””
Claire looked down.
“Because he knew you would need answers.””
“That doesn’t answer my question.””
Her eyes lifted to mine.
“Because I was there when he found out the truth.””
The word hung between us.
The truth.
Everyone kept saying that word.
Thomas.
Russell.
Now her.
I was beginning to hate how much power two simple words could hold.
“What truth?””
Claire looked toward the house.
“Can I come in?””
I hesitated.
Then I opened the door wider.
Not because I trusted her.
Because I needed answers.
She stepped inside slowly, looking around the hallway.
Her expression changed.
Not jealousy.
Not surprise.
Sadness.
“You kept everything the same.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“The house.””
She touched the edge of the table near the entrance.
“Russell always said you would.””
I felt a strange ache in my chest.
“You knew him well?””
Claire looked at me.
“Yes.””
“How?””
She removed her coat and placed it over her arm.
“I worked for him.””
I immediately became cautious.
“As what?””
“A financial consultant.””
The answer surprised me.
“You were involved with his money?””
“Yes.””
I almost laughed.
“Then you know why everyone thinks I married him.””
Claire’s expression softened.
“I know why everyone thinks many things.””
I crossed my arms.
“And what do you think?””
She was quiet for a moment.
Then she said:
“I think Russell was the loneliest wealthy man I ever met.””
The words hit me unexpectedly.
Because they were true.
People saw the mansion.
The cars.
The expensive watches.
They didn’t see the man sitting alone at a dining table built for twelve people.
They didn’t see him eating dinner while staring at an empty chair.
Claire walked toward the living room.
“He asked me to help organize his finances after his first wife died.””
I followed her.
“And you became friends?””
“Something like that.””
She looked at the fireplace.
“Russell wasn’t someone who trusted easily.””
I smiled faintly.
“He trusted me.””
Claire looked at me.
“Yes.””
There was something strange in her tone.
Almost like she was confirming something.
“What?””
She shook her head.
“Nothing.””
“No.””
I stepped closer.
“You came here because Russell wanted me to know something. So tell me.””
Claire looked at me for a long moment.
Then she opened the folder she had been carrying.
Inside were documents.
More documents.
I was beginning to think Russell had left behind an entire second life hidden in paperwork.
She pulled out a photograph.
My heart stopped.
It was Russell.
But not with me.
With Claire.
They were sitting at a restaurant.
The picture was old.
Years old.
I looked at her.
“Who took this?””
“I did.””
“Why?””
“Because Russell asked me to.””
I stared at the photo.
“When?””
“Before he met you.””
That confused me.
“Why would he leave me a picture of you?””
Claire looked down.
“Because you need to understand something.””
She placed the photo on the table.
“I wasn’t just his financial consultant.””
Silence.
Then she said:
“I was investigating his family.””
My stomach tightened.
“What?””
Claire sat down.
“Russell asked me to look into something.””
“Something about Daniel and Victoria?””
She nodded.
I felt a chill.
“What did you find?””
Before she answered, my phone rang.
The sound made both of us jump.
I looked at the screen.
Unknown number.
I almost ignored it.
But something told me not to.
I answered.
“Hello?””
No one spoke.
Just silence.
Then a voice.
A familiar voice.
“Emily.””
My body went cold.
“Victoria?””
A soft laugh came through the phone.
“I knew she would find you.””
I looked at Claire.
She immediately understood.
“Where are you?”” I asked.
“That’s not important.””
“What do you want?””
“What I want is for you to stop digging.””
My grip tightened around the phone.
“I’m not digging.””
“Really?””
Her voice was calm.
Too calm.
“You always were good at pretending.””
I felt anger rise inside me.
“You don’t know me.””
“No?””
A pause.
“My father married you after knowing you for three months. You moved into his house. You became his wife. You inherited his trust.””
She lowered her voice.
“And now you’re searching through his secrets.””
“I’m looking for answers.””
“Answers?””
Victoria laughed.
“My father spent his whole life protecting people who didn’t deserve it.””
My eyes narrowed.
“Is that what you think?””
“I know it.””
The confidence in her voice bothered me.
“Why are you calling me?””
Another pause.
Then:
“Because I’m giving you a chance.””
“A chance for what?””
“To walk away.””
I looked at Claire.
“From what?””
Victoria didn’t answer immediately.
Then she said:
“From finding out what your husband really did.””
The call ended.
I stood there staring at the phone.
Claire looked worried.
“She knows.””
“Knows what?””
“That I’m here.””
I looked at her.
“How?””
Claire didn’t answer.
And that scared me more than anything.
“Start from the beginning,” I said.
Claire nodded.
She opened the folder.
“Six months before Russell died, he contacted me.””
“Why?””
“He had concerns.””
“About his children?””
“Yes.””
I sat down.
“What kind of concerns?””
Claire removed another document.
“Financial irregularities.””
I frowned.
“What does that mean?””
“Money was moving.””
“From where?””
“From Russell’s companies.””
My heart started beating faster.
“Was someone stealing from him?””
Claire looked at me.
“That depends on how you define stealing.””
“That’s not an answer.””
“No,” she admitted.
“It isn’t.””
She pushed the document toward me.
“These were transfers.””
I looked at the numbers.
Large numbers.
Numbers I couldn’t even process.
“Millions?””
Claire nodded.
“Over several years.””
I looked up.
“Who?””
She didn’t speak.
She didn’t need to.
The answer was already forming in my mind.
“No.””
Claire looked at me sadly.
“Emily.””
“No.””
I stood.
“You’re saying Russell’s children stole from him?””
“I’m saying Russell believed someone close to him was manipulating his finances.””
My heart raced.
“Did he know who?””
“Yes.””
“Who?””
Claire hesitated.
Then she said:
“He didn’t believe it at first.””
“What changed?””
Claire looked toward the staircase.
“Then he found something in his own house.””
I froze.
“What?””
“A document.””
“What document?””
“One that showed someone had been planning for his death before he became sick.””
The room suddenly felt too quiet.
I stared at her.
“Are you saying someone tried to kill him?””
Claire looked horrified.
“No.””
She answered quickly.
“Not kill.””
“Then what?””
“Control.””
I didn’t understand.
Claire leaned forward.
“Russell had a medical condition. Someone discovered it before Russell told anyone.””
My skin prickled.
“And?””
“And that person started making moves.””
“What moves?””
She opened the folder again.
Inside was a copy of an email.
I read the first line.
My breath caught.
It was addressed to someone.
A message discussing Russell’s illness.
Discussing his timeline.
Discussing what would happen after his death.
My hands went cold.
“This isn’t possible.””
Claire whispered:
“That’s what Russell said.””
I looked at her.
“What did he do?””
“He changed everything.””
“The will?””
“Yes.””
“The trust?””
“Yes.””
“The conditions?””
“Yes.””
I stared at the documents.
Then I remembered the hidden compartment.
The letter.
The warning.
The person who knows the truth is the same person who tried to make sure you never found it.
My voice was barely audible.
“Claire…”
“Yes?””
“Who was the person Russell was protecting me from?””
Claire’s face changed.
For the first time since she arrived, she looked afraid.
She reached into the folder.
She pulled out one final document.
Then she placed it in front of me.
“I think you already know.””
I looked down.
There was a name.
A name that made my entire body go numb.
Because it wasn’t Victoria.
It wasn’t Daniel.
It wasn’t even someone outside the family.
It was someone I had trusted.
Someone who had stood beside Russell.
Someone who had looked me in the eyes after his death and promised to help me.
My fingers trembled as I read it.
May you like
And then Claire whispered:
“Russell believed this person was the reason he couldn’t tell you the truth while he was alive.””
