Chapter 9: The Truth Behind Caleb’s Promise

The room felt smaller after I read my father’s words.

Not because anything had changed.

Because everything had.

I stared at Caleb.

My little brother.

The kid who used to follow me around the house asking me to help with homework.

The kid who cried when our neighbor’s dog got sick.

The kid who looked terrified every time Vanessa raised her voice.

The kid who had sat across from me in the kitchen and told me secrets he had carried for five years.

Now my father’s last warning was sitting between us.

*Especially Caleb.*

Caleb looked at the letter.

Then at me.

“Nia…”

I stepped back.

“Don’t.””

His face fell.

“I can explain.””

The sentence made my stomach twist.

Because everyone who had lied to me had said the same thing.

I can explain.

Vanessa stood.

“Wait.””

I looked at her.

“Why?””

“Because you don’t know what that means.””

“I know exactly what it says.””

“No.””

Her voice was firm.

“The letter was written by your father when he was scared.””

“And?””

“And scared people can make mistakes.””

I stared at her.

“Are you defending him?””

“No.””

She looked at Caleb.

“I’m saying there’s more.””

That was the one sentence I couldn’t stand anymore.

There’s more.

There was always more.

Everyone had a second layer.

A hidden reason.

A secret explanation.

And I was always the last person to know.

I turned toward Caleb.

“How long?””

He looked down.

“How long what?””

“How long have you known?””

His eyes filled.

“Nia…”

“How long have you known the truth?””

He didn’t answer.

That was enough.

I laughed quietly.

“You knew.””

“I knew pieces.””

“Pieces.””

I repeated the word.

“That’s what everyone says.””

“I didn’t know everything.””

“But you knew enough.””

Caleb wiped his face.

“I was trying to protect you.””

The words hit harder than I expected.

Because they sounded exactly like Vanessa.

Exactly like my father.

Everyone was protecting me.

Everyone except me.

“Stop saying that.””

“Nia—”

“Stop.””

My voice broke.

“I’m tired of people making choices for me.””

Nobody spoke.

Then Caleb said quietly:

“You’re right.””

That surprised me.

He looked at me.

“I was wrong.””

I didn’t expect that.

I expected an excuse.

A defense.

Something.

Not an apology.

“I should have told you.””

“Yes.””

“But Dad made me promise.””

“You were nine.””

“I know.””

“You keep saying that.””

“Because I do know.””

His voice cracked.

“I know I was a kid. I know it wasn’t fair. I know I should have told someone.””

He looked at the letter.

“But Dad was dying.””

Silence.

The anger inside me weakened slightly.

Not disappeared.

Just weakened.

“What do you mean?””

Caleb swallowed.

“The promise wasn’t made five years ago.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“It was made the day before the accident.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

Caleb looked at Vanessa.

She nodded slowly.

“He didn’t tell me this.””

I looked between them.

“What happened?””

Caleb sat down.

“I heard Dad and Vanessa arguing.””

“The same night?””

“Yes.””

“What did they say?””

He looked at his hands.

“Dad wanted to tell you.””

“Tell me what?””

“The truth about Daniel.””

My breathing slowed.

“And?””

“Vanessa told him no.””

I looked at her.

She didn’t deny it.

“Why?””

Vanessa’s voice was quiet.

“Because Daniel was watching us.””

I stared.

“What?””

“He knew your father was getting close.””

Caleb continued.

“Dad told Vanessa that if something happened, she had to take care of you.””

My chest tightened.

“And what did he tell you?””

Caleb looked at me.

“He told me to protect you.””

I almost laughed.

“Protect me from what?””

Caleb looked toward the window.

“From everyone.””

That night, nobody slept.

The three of us sat in the living room.

For the first time in years, we weren’t pretending.

No perfect family image.

No quiet dinners.

No fake smiles.

Just three people surrounded by a truth too big to ignore.

Vanessa finally spoke.

“Your father knew Daniel was planning something.””

“Planning what?””

“We don’t know.””

“That’s not good enough.””

“I know.””

I looked at her.

She seemed different.

Not softer.

Just honest.

“He found evidence that Daniel had been using your mother’s identity.””

“For what?””

“Financial fraud.””

I frowned.

“My mother?””

“No.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“Daniel was pretending to act on behalf of your mother after she died.””

My stomach turned.

“He used her name?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because people trusted her.””

I looked down.

My mother.

A person I remembered as warmth and kindness.

Someone had used her memory as a weapon.

“Did my father stop him?””

“He tried.””

“What happened?””

Vanessa went quiet.

Then:

“He found out Daniel had someone inside his company.””

“Someone helping him?””

“Yes.””

“Who?””

She looked at Caleb.

Then away.

“I don’t know.””

That answer bothered me.

Because I knew she was leaving something out.

But before I could ask, my phone buzzed.

Everyone froze.

Unknown number.

A message.

*You finally know enough to be dangerous.*

My hands went cold.

Another message appeared.

*Ask Vanessa why she was at the hospital the night your father died.*

I looked up.

Vanessa’s face changed.

“You were there?””

She didn’t answer.

“Nia—”

“You were at the hospital.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

She looked down.

“Because your father called me.””

The room went silent.

“What?””

“He called me before the accident.””

My heart started pounding.

“Why?””

“Because he knew he was being followed.””

Caleb stood.

“Dad never told me that.””

“I know.””

“Why didn’t you tell us?””

Vanessa looked devastated.

“Because he made me promise.””

I almost shouted.

“Another promise?””

“Yes.””

She looked at me.

“The last thing your father said to me was not about himself.””

“What was it?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“It was about you.””

I didn’t speak.

“He said, ‘Don’t let Nia find out the truth from someone who wants to hurt her.’”

The sentence hit me.

Because suddenly I understood.

My father wasn’t warning me about Caleb.

Not exactly.

He was warning me about trusting anyone without understanding their reasons.

Including Caleb.

Including Vanessa.

Including the stranger messaging me.

Including myself.

My phone buzzed again.

Another message.

This time, there was a photograph.

I opened it.

My blood froze.

It was an old picture.

My father.

My mother.

Vanessa.

And Daniel.

But there was something else.

A fifth person.

Someone standing behind them.

Someone whose face had been cut out of every old family photo I had ever seen.

I zoomed in.

The person was wearing a necklace.

My mother’s necklace.

The same necklace that disappeared from my drawer.

Then the message appeared.

*You want the truth about Caleb?*

I looked at the screen.

*Ask him why he lied about the night your father died.*

I slowly looked up.

Caleb was staring at my phone.

His face had gone completely white.

“You know that picture,” I said.

He didn’t answer.

“Caleb.””

His eyes filled with tears.

“I didn’t want you to find out this way.””

My heart sank.

“What did you do?””

He shook his head.

“I didn’t hurt Dad.””

“I didn’t ask that.””

He looked at Vanessa.

Then back at me.

“I lied because Dad told me to.””

“About what?””

Caleb’s voice became barely audible.

“The night he died…”

He swallowed.

“I saw who was driving the car.””

The room went silent.

My entire body went cold.

“Who?””

Caleb looked at me.

May you like

And whispered:

“It wasn’t Dad.””
