Chapter 8: What His Father Did

Daniel stood on the porch with the stranger's phone in his hand.

The message glowed against the darkness.

*Now ask your father what he did.*

Michael had stopped near the driveway.

He stared at the phone.

Then at Daniel.

“Where did you get that?””

“It was under the porch.””

Michael's expression changed.

“Give it to me.””

Daniel didn't move.

“No.””

“Daniel.””

“No.””

Michael took a step forward.

“You don't know who sent it.””

“Neither do you.””

“I know enough to tell you that this isn't a game.””

Daniel held the phone between them.

“Then tell me the truth.””

Michael looked away.

“Not out here.””

“Why?””

“Because there are things you don't discuss on a porch when somebody may be watching.””

Daniel glanced toward the street.

It was empty.

The wet pavement reflected the porch light.

No cars.

No footsteps.

No figure beneath the trees.

But Daniel couldn't shake the feeling that someone was close.

He followed his father inside.

Angela was still standing beside the coffee table, clutching Victor's letter.

“What happened?”” she asked.

Daniel held up the phone.

“This.””

Angela read the message.

Her face tightened.

“Who sent it?””

“It says Victor.””

Michael closed the curtains.

“Turn off the porch light.””

Angela looked at him.

“Why?””

“Just do it.””

She switched it off.

The living room fell dim.

Only the lamp beside the couch remained on.

Daniel put the phone on the table.

“Now answer me.””

Michael stood near the window.

“What do you want to know?””

“What did you do?””

Michael didn't respond.

Daniel pointed toward Victor's letter.

“It says you noticed something wrong with the account.””

“Yes.””

“You knew Victor was moving money.””

“Yes.””

“You said you didn't know the whole story.””

“I didn't.””

“But you knew enough to confront him.””

Michael's eyes lowered.

“I confronted him once.””

“When?””

“The night before your twenty-first birthday.””

Daniel stared.

“And you never told me.””

“No.””

“Why?””

“Because I thought I could fix it.””

Daniel laughed without humor.

“That's what Mom always says.””

Michael turned toward him.

“Your mother wasn't the only person making mistakes.””

Daniel waited.

Michael walked to the kitchen and poured himself a glass of water.

His hand trembled.

He didn't drink.

Instead, he placed the glass on the counter.

“I went to Victor's office.””

“You went alone?””

“Yes.””

“What happened?””

“He showed me the account.””

Daniel's eyebrows pulled together.

“My account?””

“Not exactly.””

Michael took a slow breath.

“There was another account attached to your name.””

Daniel stared.

“What does that mean?””

“It means someone had been using your identity to move money.””

“Victor?””

Michael nodded.

“I believed it was him.””

“Was it?””

“That night, I thought so.””

“And now?””

Michael looked at Angela.

“I don't know.””

Daniel's voice rose.

“You don't know?””

“I know what I saw.””

“Then tell me.””

Michael sat down.

Daniel remained standing.

Michael rubbed his palms together.

“Victor had copies of your documents.””

“What documents?””

“Your birth certificate. Your passport application. Your school records.””

Daniel's face hardened.

“How did he get them?””

“Your grandfather had given him access to family files.””

“And he used them?””

“He opened accounts.””

Daniel's stomach turned.

“What kind of accounts?””

“Investment accounts. Transfer accounts. Things designed to move money without attracting attention.””

“How much?””

Michael hesitated.

“Enough.””

Daniel slammed his hand against the table.

“Enough for what?””

“Enough to destroy everything if the authorities had traced it back to you.””

Daniel stared at him.

“That's why you kept me out of it.””

“Yes.””

Michael looked exhausted.

“I was terrified that one mistake would put your future at risk.””

“And instead you lied to me.””

“Yes.””

Daniel shook his head.

“You keep saying you protected me.””

Michael nodded slowly.

“I did.””

“By hiding everything.””

“I thought I was.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“You and Mom decided what I was allowed to know.””

“Yes.””

“And while I was out there building my life, you were fighting my uncle behind my back.””

Michael looked down.

“I was fighting for your life to stay untouched.””

Daniel's expression softened for a fraction of a second.

Then he remembered the message.

“What did you do after you found the account?””

Michael didn't answer.

Daniel's voice became quieter.

“Dad.””

“I closed it.””

Daniel frowned.

“You could do that?””

“No.””

Michael looked at him.

“That was the problem.””

Daniel waited.

“I transferred the remaining funds.””

“To where?””

“An account under your mother's name.””

Angela looked up sharply.

“You never told me that.””

Michael turned toward her.

“I couldn't.””

“Michael.””

“I needed Victor to believe we'd abandoned your inheritance.””

Daniel stared.

“You moved my money?””

“Yes.””

“Without telling me?””

“Yes.””

“Where is it now?””

Michael hesitated.

Daniel's patience broke.

“Where is it?””

Angela whispered, “Michael, you need to tell him.””

Michael nodded.

“The money was moved to an account your grandfather had created years before.””

Daniel blinked.

“Grandpa?””

“Yes.””

“Then why did Victor say he controlled it?””

“Because he thought he did.””

Daniel sat down.

“So the inheritance is still there.””

“Yes.””

“How much?””

Michael looked at Angela.

She answered.

“More than your grandfather originally intended.””

Daniel looked between them.

“How much more?””

“We never touched it,” Michael said.

“Why?””

“Because your grandfather left a second instruction.””

Daniel's eyes narrowed.

“What instruction?””

Michael stood and walked toward the hallway.

“Come with me.””

Daniel followed.

Angela stayed where she was.

“Michael.””

He glanced back.

“We're finishing this tonight.””

He disappeared into the hallway.

Daniel went after him.

They stopped outside the small study.

Michael unlocked the door.

The room smelled of old books and dust.

A desk sat beneath the window.

Daniel had seen it hundreds of times but had never been allowed to open the bottom drawer.

Michael pulled out a key.

“Your grandfather gave me this before he died.””

Daniel watched.

“I thought the key was gone.””

“It wasn't.””

Michael unlocked the drawer.

Inside was a black folder.

He removed it carefully.

Daniel could hear his own heartbeat.

Michael placed the folder on the desk.

“Your grandfather instructed me not to open this unless Victor ever came after you.””

Daniel looked at him.

“And he did.””

“Yes.””

Michael opened the folder.

Inside was a bank statement.

A legal letter.

And one photograph.

Daniel picked up the statement first.

His eyes widened.

The balance was far larger than he expected.

“This can't be right.””

“It is.””

“How?””

“Your grandfather invested the original money.””

Daniel stared at the number.

“Why would he leave this much?””

Michael smiled sadly.

“Because he started saving for you before you were born.””

Daniel looked at the photograph.

It showed his grandfather holding him as a baby.

Angela stood beside them.

Michael was younger, his hair darker.

On the back, someone had written:

*For the boy who changed all of our lives.*

Daniel swallowed.

“He knew.””

“What?””

“That someday I'd need this.””

Michael shook his head.

“No.””

“He did.””

“No,” Michael said quietly.

“He hoped you wouldn't.””

Daniel looked at him.

“He wanted the money to be a foundation, not a rescue.””

Daniel's eyes returned to the statement.

“And Victor knew about it.””

“Yes.””

“Then why did he need the house?””

“He wanted leverage.””

Michael pointed to the legal letter.

“This was the part he could never get.””

Daniel read the first paragraph.

It explained that the inheritance could only be accessed with proof that Daniel had reached a certain age and completed a financial education program arranged by his grandfather's attorney.

Daniel looked up.

“Financial education?””

Michael nodded.

“Six months.””

“Did I do it?””

“No.””

“Why?””

“Because Victor interfered.””

Daniel's brow furrowed.

“How?””

“He contacted the attorney.””

“And?””

“He claimed you were financially irresponsible.””

Daniel stared.

“He lied.””

“Yes.””

“What happened?””

“The attorney suspended the release.””

Daniel looked at the documents.

“So that's why I never got it.””

“Yes.””

“Then how did Victor get access?””

Michael's face hardened.

“Because he forged your signature.””

Daniel went silent.

Angela appeared in the doorway.

“I found out later.””

Daniel turned.

“You knew?””

“Not at first.””

“When?””

“After your grandfather's attorney called me.””

She walked into the room.

“He told me someone had submitted documents using your name.””

Daniel's voice cracked.

“And you still didn't tell me.””

“I was afraid.””

“Of Victor?””

“Yes.””

“And if you'd told me?””

“You would have confronted him.””

Daniel stared at her.

“You're right.””

Angela looked down.

“I didn't want you becoming part of our fight.””

Daniel shook his head.

“You already made me part of it.””

Michael's phone buzzed.

All three looked toward it.

Michael pulled it from his pocket.

A message.

He opened it.

His face went pale.

Daniel stepped closer.

“What now?””

Michael didn't answer.

Daniel took the phone.

The message contained a bank account number.

Then another line.

*“The account is still active.””*

Daniel looked at Michael.

“What does that mean?””

Michael whispered, “It means someone just accessed it.””

Angela's hand flew to her mouth.

“How?””

Michael checked the timestamp.

“Thirty seconds ago.””

Daniel's heart pounded.

“Can we see who logged in?””

Michael shook his head.

“Not from this phone.””

Daniel looked at the account number.

It was unfamiliar.

Then he noticed the final four digits.

He knew them.

He had seen them before.

His face went white.

“Dad.””

“What?””

Daniel pointed.

“That number…”

Michael looked.

Daniel whispered,

“It's Mom's birthday.””

Angela froze.

Michael stared at the screen.

“No.””

Daniel shook his head.

“Someone used her identity.””

Angela stepped backward.

“That's impossible.””

Michael's phone buzzed again.

This time, the message was only one sentence.

*“You finally understand why Victor was afraid of me.””*

Daniel stared at it.

Then another message appeared.

*“Ask Angela who she gave the account password to.””*

Angela's face went completely blank.

Daniel slowly turned toward her.

“Mom?””

She didn't speak.

Michael stared at his wife.

“Angela.””

Her lips trembled.

“I never gave anyone the password.””

Daniel took one step toward her.

“Then how do they have it?””

Angela looked at the black folder.

Then at the phone.

Then at her son.

Finally, in a broken whisper, she said,

“Because there was one person I trusted enough to tell.””

Daniel waited.

Michael's voice was barely audible.

“Who?””

Angela looked directly at Daniel.

May you like

And said the name neither of them had expected to hear.

“Your sister.””
