Chapter 13 - THE TRUTH FROM THE PAST

We told Noah the next morning.

We sat him down between us on the sofa. We told him simply. Clearly. Without hiding anything.

We told him about Arthur’s sister. About the son she gave away. About Evelyn’s secret marriage. About the tangled, terrible truth that made Evelyn his blood relative after all. That she had been cruel to him not because he was beneath her—but because she believed she owned him. That she had been claiming him all along.

Noah listened quietly. He did not interrupt. He did not cry. He simply sat, his small hands folded in his lap, his face thoughtful.

When we finished, there was silence.

“Is that all?” Noah asked finally.

Daniel blinked. “That is quite a lot, Noah.”

Noah looked up at me. “Does it change who I am?”

“No,” I said, my voice thick with tears. “It does not change who you are.”

“Does it change how much you love me?”

“Never,” Daniel said immediately. “Nothing could ever change that.”

Noah nodded. Then he looked at us both, his expression serious and calm.

“Then Grandma can keep her blood,” he said. “Because she is mean. And I choose you.”

He climbed off the sofa and walked out of the room, leaving Daniel and me staring at each other in stunned silence. A five-year-old child had just resolved the greatest crisis of our lives with a single sentence.

But Evelyn did not care what Noah chose. She cared about the law. And blood. And what she believed was hers.

Three days later, she filed new documents.
