Chapter 14 - THE TRUTH COMES HOME

I told Marcus first. He sat in silence for a very long time after reading the journal, his face pale, his expression grave.

"This changes everything," he said finally. "Not legally—the will stands, Grace’s wishes are clear. But morally… it explains every single choice Arthur ever made. Every secret. Every hesitation. Every attempt to protect Grace from Evelyn."

"And it explains why Evelyn killed her," I said. "Grace wasn't just an outsider who stole Arthur’s affection. She was the living proof that Arthur’s heart had never truly belonged to Evelyn. And that meant Lily—Evelyn’s own great-granddaughter—carried Arthur’s true bloodline, untainted by Evelyn’s schemes."

"Evelyn couldn't destroy Arthur," Marcus said quietly. "So she destroyed the one thing that proved he had loved someone else more. Grace."

We decided together. We would keep the truth private. Grace had hidden it for a reason. She had not wanted Lily to grow up burdened by such a complicated legacy. She had wanted Lily to be free—to be loved simply as Lily, not as the secret heir to a broken family.

But one person deserved to know.

I went to visit Helena. She had been released on bail while awaiting sentencing, living quietly in a small cottage on the edge of town, far from the mansion and its ghosts. She opened the door slowly, her face pale, her eyes tired.

"Adrian," she said, surprised. "I did not expect to see you."

I stepped inside. The cottage was simple, neat, filled with flowers and books. We sat by the fire. I placed Grace’s journal on the table between us.

"Grace was Arthur’s daughter," I said simply.

Helena went still. She stared at me, then at the journal, then back at me. Slowly, she nodded.

"I suspected," she admitted. "Almost from the beginning. The way Arthur looked at her. The shape of her smile. He said nothing. I said nothing. Evelyn would have killed them both sooner if she knew."

"Did you help him?" I asked. "Protect her?"

Helena looked into the fire. "Arthur begged me. He said—keep her safe. Do not let Evelyn guess. I promised. And then… then Elias came. And everything fell apart. I tried to protect Grace. Truly I did. But Elias was too clever. Evelyn was too blind. And Arthur… Arthur was too afraid to speak the truth aloud."

"Grace knew," I said. "She wrote it all down. She kept it hidden to protect us."

Helena wiped a tear from her cheek. "She was the best of us. She carried the truth like a cross and never complained. Never used it to hurt anyone. That is how I know—Arthur’s blood ran true in her. Better than in any of us."

I stood up to leave. Helena reached out and touched my arm.

"Do not tell Lily yet," she said softly. "Let her be a child. Let her grow strong. And when the time comes… tell her Grace chose love over power. That is the inheritance that matters."

May you like

I nodded. "I will."

That evening, I told no one else. I simply sat in Lily’s room while she slept, watching her breathe, watching Mr. Benny rest beside her pillow. She had Grace’s eyes. Arthur’s chin. The Hale blood ran in her veins, yes—but she would be raised with Grace’s heart. That was the legacy that mattered.
